What constitutes a con?
1- To swindle (a victim) by first gaining his confidence.
OR
2- To trick or fool by glib persuasion
Is it true that the people in power are doing both the above in a very professional way? I do not think so, our politicians are so warm and down to earth that they not only fly economy class but they also travel in trains and sleep in the huts of the poor villagers. That is what we seen on television and read in the newspapers. It is termed as the austerity drive.
Going by the latest headline news being shown across the news channels, about four top Indian Army Generals are involved in a land scam, one of them is supposed to be the right hand man of the army chief General Deepak Kapoor. They have no doubt brought shame to the uniform. I would not at all be surprised if there are more such scams waiting to be unearthed in the other wings of the Indian security apparatus. It seems that the compulsive personality traits of some have eventually filtered down in to the Indian armed forces.
I am sad yet not at all shocked by this news. At the same time, this breaking news made me remember a book written by Arun Shourie “Will The Iron Fence Save A Tree Hollowed by Termites”? No prizes for guessing that the Tree is India, the Iron Fence is the Indian Armed Forces and Intelligence Agencies. But Who are the Termites?
The termites are the Madhu Koda’s, the Raja’s of Spectrum, the Abdul Karim Telgi’s, some top politicians, as also Ali Hasan Khan who was allowed to get away. Together these people must have swindled the country of more than a massive one hundred and ninety thousand crores or more. Most of that money may also have gone in to terrorism. The four guys mentioned here may constitute not even point one percent of the total termites. There must be more in the police, judiciary, entertainment, govt officials, industrial sector, IAS officers, media etc. There surely must another ten million such termites eating in to the tree. I wonder who has nourished, nurtured and shielded these termites.
Was Arnab Goswami right, on Times Now when he said, “The people get the government it deserves and the govt gets the army it deserves”.
Well, there is no denying that the tree India is a great democracy and a rising economic power. Of course, our politicians and media keep drilling in to us that we are militarily the next super power. We must be.
After all, isn’t it a fact that we have treated our armed forces more than well? It is a different matter that we regard Shah Rukh Khan, Mahender Singh Dhoni, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar more as heroes than the brave soldiers who take bullets in their chests to safeguard our lives. So what, if we are most of the time glued to our television sets busy watching the engrossing and tantalizing reality/dance shows and cricket matches. The citizens cannot be expected to think about the hard ships faced by our security men always, yes may be once a year there can be a token symbolism.
As a mark of loyalty to the thousands of citizens of India who have been the victims of terrorism, isn’t it more than enough that the govt has done its duty by sending seven huge dossiers to Pakistan. At the same time, the government is perfectly right in giving a thousand excuses not to execute the death sentence awarded to the terrorists by the courts. They are not fools to alienate the mass Muslim vote bank are they. Do the people realize how difficult it is to come to power, especially in Delhi? Can they imagine the kind of money that is invested in the elections and the returns accruing out of it? It is beyond the imagination of the ordinary population. The populace has the government it deserved.
The innocent populace of India can never understand why this govt may be perceived doing things it is not supposed to and vice versa .The media and the citizens sometimes unnecessarily create a hue and cry about the following. .
1- Chinese intrusions in to our territories.
2- -The sabotage at Kaiga nuclear plant.
3- Price rise.
4- Farmer’s suicides.
5- Defunct ministries of Aviation & Agriculture.
6- The Maoist & Naxalite menance.
7- Shielding of criminal syndicates inimical to Indians.
8- A faulty reservation policy.
9- Corruption seeped in to the core of the country.
10- Right since the 1993 Mumbai blasts not a single terrorist has been send to the gallows, so did our soldiers and police sacrificed their lives in vain?
The list could go on and on. Grow up guys, it has become necessary to nourish and nurture the termites. Hence, not surprisingly the govt may have got the armed forces it deserves.
To end this article there is nothing more appropriate than a Para from Arun Shourie’s book – “For, defense forces are to a country what an iron railing put around it is to a tree; in the end, however strong the railing, however sturdy and well polished its looks, it cannot protect a tree that has been hallowed by termites from within: the storm shall fell it”.
It is only when we rid the tree of termites that India will be secure. But how do we rid the tree of termites? The people shielding and nourishing the termites are all-powerful and have being voted to power by the very people that they are out to con.
So will the iron fence be able to save the tree hollowed by termites? Or is it that there are some people who want the iron fence itself to corrode, deteriorate, rust and be defamed in the eyes of the Indian public and the world at large?
