Bivy or Ultralight Tent?
I have been a fast & light backpacker for years and have always used one or two man tents. Recently I've been thinking about getting a bivy but am not completely sold on the idea.
The cons are beginning to outweigh the pros, but I'd like to hear any compelling reasons for or against the bivy.
My main issues with it are condensation and a lack of protection for gear in bad weather. The big plus is its year round capability.
I own and have used both.
I have the same problems with the bivy that mostly everyone else has stated. My biggest problem is the lack of room. I tend to read or write in my journal or go over my maps in my tent. I can't do that easily in my bivy. The other issue I have is the lack of ventilation in the bivy. A humid night in July...stuck in a bivy...it sucks. What about Black Fly season? Sometimes you just need a tent in order to get a good night sleep..or else you have to meadow crash under a mosquito net? Nah...take a tent.
I find I only use the bivy is the early spring (like this past weekend) or in the late fall. Otherwise I take a tent.
