How do you get this exact guitar tone?
I want to find the exact guitar tone for The Downfall Of Us All by A Day To Remember. I know it's in Drop C, but what are they using
Distortion?
Overdrive?
I have a fender frontman amp and a line 6 spyder III and a wah pedal so if you can please tell me what effects they use or if they use thicker guitar strings so that i can try and mimic the tone to my guitar
thank you!
Because of the exact guitar that you have I can't give you an exact tone match, but I think I can steer you in the general direction.
Every element of the signal chain is important when you're trying to get a good guitar tone, especially when you're talking high-gain.
So, from the beginning, thicker strings do help. I personally prefer 11's, I usually tune to "Drop C#" ie Drop D down 1/2 step, with "Drop C" being Drop D down 1 step. So pretty close. I prefer Elixirs because they last much longer than other strings. I hate changing strings.
Pickups - high output pickups are better than low output pickups for your bridge humbucker so you get a nice solid chunk. You usually want a relatively low output neck pickup, though - better tone, dynamic range, and better sustain. You don't *have* to use active pickups, but I do prefer having some sort of active electronics onboard - either active pickups or an onboard preamp. Helps prevent tone suckage, ie, keep your treble.
I actually use my wah pedal as a type of booster/filter pedal - I set it about 2/3rds forward and leave it there, and when I want a solo tone I'll kick the boost button on (its a Dunlop 535Q). This helps me keep the guitar boosted in the mids and cuts the bass a little, which is good for keeping lots of clarity (ie not mud or fuzz).
When I'm not using a nice tube amp I use a Boss Metalcore for my distortion needs.... but for you it sounds like you'll have to go with the Line 6. Not a big fan of that amp series, but anyways....
In general, I think the Insane channel is useless. Don't use it - too much gain, noise, fuzz, the notes start lacking articulation and anything other than single notes, octaves, or power chords sounds like crap. So stick to channels with lower gain.
In general I put my amp settings at 5-6 for Bass, 4-5 for Mids, 7-8 for Treble, and between 6-8 for Gain. I never dime my gain, ever, and I rarely go above 75% - usually at this point all you're adding is fuzz and noise, and not doing anything for your tone.
If you're playing solo you might want to raise your bass a little and cut your mids some, but not if you're playing in a band or recording. In fact, if you're recording, cutting your bass and gain a little and raising your mids a little will help you get a better recorded tone.
I don't think the Fender Frontman gives a suitable distorted tone. Maybe with the right pedal?
I assume you're tuning to Drop whatever, right? It'll be hard to match the tone without doing that. Make sure your guitar is properly set up and intonated for that particular tuning, or the strings'll buzz and/or the guitar won't sound in tune with itself on the higher frets.
I usually suggest adding EQ both before your amp and in the fx loop, but the Spyder series doesn't have fx loops, I believe, so there goes that idea. It sucks, too - I think that putting a BBE Sonic Maximizer or something like that in a Spyder's fx loop would really improve the sound. *sigh*.....
Hope that helped!
