Best server OS for old computer?
I have an 8 year old computer with the following specs:
Pentium III 800MHz
128MB RAM
10GB HDD
What operating system should I install on it? I already have Linux knowledge (ubuntu desktop edition) and was interested in FreeBSD and Solaris. The server will be connected to the internet and be used for websites and maybe for a game (Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory). Should I leave the computer on all the time? Will it break-down really soon if I use it as a server? Could someone please point me in the right direction?
Thank you
Personally I would use linux, probably Gentoo or Debian, and you won't be using a graphical front end (so no Gnome or KDE) so that will leave more power open for everything else.
You could try out FreeBSD, I have no real experience with it but a number of friends have used it on lower powered machines specifically to run an RTCW server and didn't seem to have many problems with it.
I would still lean more toward linux because of its larger, more involved development community (at least in my perception of it).
Leaving it on all the time shouldn't hurt it, the only component likely to fail through frequent use is the hard drive (but that's assuming constant disk access, which you probably wouldn't have). You just need to pay some attention to it so if fans fail you replace them.
You may also want to find some dirt cheap RAM (which it ought to be at this point, I'd check on ebay) and push it up as far as possible, that will help with running the game server and it will also help keep disk access to a minimum (since you won't need to use swap space as often).
