Kaz Away

The quick fix

Fat metabolisers, diet shakes, diet meal plans, the Lemon Detox and so on are so predominant in today's society. The latest thing on the market is ultrasounding your fat! Blasting it away so it can dissolve in your blood stream to be absorbed by your body and treated as a toxin. That's a bit of a chance to take if you ask me. What if the body cannot dispose if it? Where does it go?

Why are quick fixes predominant? Some would say we are time poor. Others say it's all too hard to lose weight the healthy way. So what is it? As a nation, we are always after a quick fix. Everybody is looking for the fast solution to weight loss. All this eating healthy, exhibiting will power, and exercising regularly, that's a lot of hard work! We don't have the time for it! Or do we? Are we just looking for the quick fix? Or are we genuinely bamboozled with the way to effectively lose weight?

We look to delivered food, shakes and detox products as a means to make things easy for us. Fat metabolisers clearly state that they don't work without regular exercise and healthy eating and some of them have dreadful effects like immediate diarrhoea as you excrete the fat. So why are we wasting our hard earned dollars on these products? Do they give us the nutrients our body needs? Will our heart and lung function improve as a result of consuming these products? We all know the answer is no.

It's a known fact that people who follow diet meal plans more often than not put the weight back on when they stop using the products. So is it that we are are looking towards an easier solution, or do some of us really struggle and need the help to lose the weight we so easily gain? You have to work at these things, just like you have to work at putting on weight. So why are we good at the gaining and not at the losing??

It takes hard work. I ask people about their diet. They tell me their diet is great and they eat really healthily and then you ask them to write it down and all is revealed. There is a glass of wine here and there, the odd chocolate biscuit, the ice creams, the skipping of breakfast and so on. Then they only exercise once a week and hope that it will be enough to burn off all those calories.

If you want to keep weight off you have to put in the hard yards. As they say, nothing in life is easy and everything you want badly enough comes at a cost. However the rewards are so worth it! You will have a healthy weight, receive all the nutrients you need to live a healthy life, and your heart, lungs and other body parts will be fit and strong to see you through until old age.

So when is it acceptable to partake in the quick fix and what are the proviso's around it?

Meal plans such as Weight Watchers, Lite and Easy, and so on.

If you need a bit of a kick start then these are OK. Likewise if you feel that you haven't got time to make sensible food choices or cook then this would be good for a period of time. If you need the support of the weigh in, the accountability, and the guidelines then this is fine. However at some point you may not always be able to participate in a meal planning program. These activities should be used to teach you about how to plan and eat sensibly.

Detoxing

I cannot stress enough the dangers of a liquid or minimalist detox. They lack the nutrients the body needs to function on a daily basis. You are doing more harm than good to your body. If you feel the need to detox then select whole foods, go without caffeine and alcohol. Do it sensibly.

Shakes or meal replacements

I think these are OK if you are pressed for time or would normally skip a meal however I don't think you should rely on them entirely. I don't think any form of shake will ever replace nutrient rich whole foods and relying on them entirely means your metabolism decreases and when you eventually start eating real food again, the weight just piles back on.

Fat metabolisers

Just don't go there! Pills and potions do not work and are just a marketing gimmick. Nothing will boost your metabolism like exercise and a healthy diet.

So what should you do? I think we all know the answer to this question. Eat sensibly, cut down on the fatty foods, the alcohol and the sugar. Put in the hard yards and find the will power to give up some of the things that you enjoy if you really want to keep your weight down. And do the exercise, on a daily basis. Even just walking for 30-60 mins per day on top of your more intense exercise will make a difference.

No-one puts on weight by just thinking about it, unless you do have a medical issue. If you feel you need more help to tick all these boxes and lose weight, seek out your GP for a referral to a dietitian, or a psychologist and do it the healthy way. Athletes and sportsmen didn't get to the top of their game by choosing the easy route! They put in the hard work. The key thing here is to be healthy and live a good life. Not everyone can be a super model, nor should they be. Find a place that is comfortable for you and if you don't want to make the sacrifices then accept that, and who you are.
