History In Brass
When you ask a couple about the activity they engage in they will tell you that brassing is no easy hobby to pursue but for them the rewards are infinite. For them to introduce you to brassing you should be polite in asking. To understand what brassing is, it is transferring the images of the flat metal figures commonly seen in tombs, images in stones in churches, and other decorative pieces from 13th to 17th Century England to paper to make artwork that could be exhibited. It is according to the couple that this kind of process is not as simple as it appears to be. England was home to this couple for four years until about a year ago when they were moved to an Air Force base. Either engraved flat brass portraits were placed on tombs or the floors of the nearby churches during the 13th Century as a way for the upper class English to honor their dead. To recreate and image the brasses would be lined with special black paper and then it will be rubbed using a special gold colored wax bar.
Following the ridges in the brass the wax rubs off on the paper recreating a certain image. Other than a duplicate brass, the couple also brought back 200 paper images from the original monument. From their brass collection the one they place much value on is that of Sir John d' Abernon who died in battle in 1277. Bookings for rubbings had to be made months earlier in order to accommodate the people who want to take rubbings off of this earliest known brass. According to the couples, the Vicars in charge of the brasses saw to it that only those with prior experience were allowed to duplicate the brasses. There has been much reluctance from the English because several Americans went there and made duplicates of the brass and then sold them in New York for $2,000 each so now everyone needs to sign a waiver promising not to sell the duplicates they make.
Initially put down from 1250 to 1650 was a large number from only 8,000 monuments remain today. The monuments include several clues and through these brasses it has been possible for the historians to trace the development of clothing and armor not to mention lifestyle. From these came about information that included a lion pictured at the feet of a knight means that he died in battle as well as a hound at someone's feet meant that he liked to hunt with dogs.
In the US the art is just catching on, although there are very few brasses in this country. Using rubbing can result in reproduced images of etchings on tombstones, decorative engravings, and manhole covers. It's a fun hobby, although it took the couple four hours to complete the rubbing of Sir d' Abernon. What several schools and art shows want is for the couple to agree to display their rubbings.
