Simple Crochet Patterns Provide Finished Projects With Pride
Finding Crochet Patterns is easy. There are literally hundreds of them available on the internet, many of them free, and free handouts are also offered at local yarn and craft stores. There are easy patterns for scarves, blankets and afghans, baby gifts, hats, sweaters and even sweaters for the dog.
Learning about hooks is one of the first steps in learning to crochet. You need to begin with a hook that is easy to handle. Larger hooks are bulky to hold and can be clumsy to maneuver. Small hooks are just that, small, easy to drop and difficult for some to see. It is best to start with the hooks in between; they are the ones most comfortable to handle and used in most simple and easy patterns.
Sizing hooks can be a bit confusing at first. In the U. S., hooks are often referred to in letters rather than numbers. The larger the letter of the alphabet, the larger the hook. In other words, a J hook is larger than a G. In the British or UK system, which is used throughout Europe, numbers are used, but the larger the number, the smaller the hook. It is best to familiarize yourself with all of this and be careful when reading a pattern to assure that you are using the proper size hook. Often the yarn packaging will list what hook should be used with that particular yarn in both systems. Conversion charts are also available and can be found free on many crochet websites.
It is also easiest for the beginner to start with the Simple Crochet Patterns with yarns. Today's glamour yarns change widths within an inch or less and may have fringe or hair. Start with a basic 4-ply yarn used for many simple scarves, afghans or sweaters. If you are crocheting for a baby, start with fingering yarn used for baby blankets, caps, booties and sweaters. The yarn packaging indicates what hook to use and will also tell you the fiber content of the yarn along with washing or cleaning instructions.
The first choice in starting your first crochet project, should be the pattern. Choose an easy pattern from the Free Crochet Patterns for a scarf or baby blanket. The pattern will tell you what yarn and hook to use. When you find the yarn, the wrapping should verify that it is what your pattern suggests and that you will be using the proper hook size. While some like to learn by trial and error, you may wish to take a class, learn from a friend or watch an internet video to view the proper steps to the stitches used in your pattern.
A simple pattern should utilize only one or two crochet stitches. The more you work the same stitch, the better you become and more inclined you will be to remember it. With a scarf or blanket, the size remains the same throughout, so you don't need to learn to increase or decrease stitches just yet.
Just remember that with your first crochet project, you want to be able to complete it and have fun while doing so. This leads to a feeling of pride when you can cover yourself up with the blanket you made, or give it as a gift. You will be anxious to make something else, but remember to stay with simple or easy patterns for at least your first few projects. As you advance you can tackle new stitches and patterns. You will learn whether you stitch true to size, or maybe your stitching is a bit tighter or looser. Once you have this figured out you can start more challenging work and know that your finish project will come out properly.
