.22 AR Uppers And Conversion Kits
The Global War on Terror has seen the price of 5.56mm ammunition soar. This is ironic as the AR-15 is now the USA's most popular centerfire rifle. Therefore there are a lot of AR-15 shooters out there with rifles that they simply can't afford to go out and shoot as often as they would like. Reloading can help this, but ultimately even reloading components can be prohibitively expensive. One great solution is to convert your rifle to take inexpensive .22LR ammunition. There are two routes available. You can fit a .22LR blowback adapter that replaces the bolt carrier of your rifle. This has the advantage of being inexpensive and not altering the ergonomics of your rifle and its sighting or fire control arrangements at all. The disadvantage is that the bullets are a slightly loose fit in the barrel so that you will get less than optimum accuracy. The barrel will also need a thorough clean before shooting centerfire ammo. The alternative is a dedicated .22 upper. This is obviates the clealing problem and is much more accurate. However, it is a much more expensive option, particularly if you purchase sights and accessories to mimic your centerfire - it is perhaps better to go the whole hog and buy a dedicated .22LR AR.
Two current blowback conversions are the Brownells .22 conversion kit and the CMMG .22 conversion kit. These are very similar and both use 10, 15, 26 or 50 round polycarbonate mags. The mags are designed to simulate the contours of USGI mags and have anti-tilt, self-lubricating followers and a built in hold-open feature. CMMG make an adapter to enable any of these magazines to work with the rifle's own hold open device. CMMG offer their .22 conversion in either black phosphated or polished stainless steel. CMMG even make a version that works with the rifle's forward assist.
The Tactical Solutions .22 upper is offered in two formats. The Tactical Solutions M-4 upper mimics the M-4 carbine in every way, apart from having a 16.1" barrel to meet NFA requirements. It has a non functioning forward assist, but the case deflector, ejection port cover, bolt release, handguard and foresight tower all replicate those of an M-4. It can also take all M-4 carbine accessories. You can train for the use of your centerfire M-4 carbine. The Tactical Solutions LT upper has a .920 aluminum barrel shroud with button rifled carbone steel liner and a cylindrical, free floating aluminum handguard.
