The Real Rembrandt
Valuing it at only $3,100, the auction house thought that the portrait was only a knockoff of a 17th century Rembrandt. Purchased for 1,500 times more than that by a British buyer, he definitely knew what he was doing. According to the experts the Rembrandt Laughing was a self portrait done by the Dutch master depicted with his head tilted back in easygoing laughter and it was sold for a measly four and a half million in an English auction house. A collector, specializing in Dutch and Flemish masters, said it's worth $30 million to $40 million, adding that he is very surprised it didn't make more at auction. After being asked to change the value of the painting the art expert from Sotheby's declined to do so. This is a rare opportunity still because when it comes to the works of Rembrandt these only come on the market once in a while.
When he was in his early 20s Rembrandt made this self portrait around 1628 while in his hometown of Leiden. Experimenting with expressions he used a mirror and his face and this was during the time when he was already establishing himself as an artist. Its presence is somewhat remarkable. In their most natural form was the light as well as the laughter.
More than 100 years was how long the painting has been in the hands of an English family. According to most people it could have been an imitator or a student of Rembrandt's. Because of a couple of poor photographs showing little of the painting's luminosity or depth, these may have resulted to a low evaluation from the auction house. Considering the brush stroke, monogram, contour, and materials, a 23 page analysis explained how these all support the fact that Rembrandt could be the only one behind the little work. Taking note of the rare style used by the painter for only about a year or so, the winner of the auction may have suspected that the painting was a genuine Rembrandt from the monogram RHL. What the monogram stood for was Rembrandt Harmenszoon of Leiden. Recorded by the auction house for its assessment was the signature HL. There are other monograms identified with Rembrandt that possess the same direction in brush strokes as this one making it even more compelling and the initials are also painted onto the background.
The experts were confused because of the shape of the body of the laughing Rembrandt. There was a woolly blanket for clothing, the metal armor and glossy shirt appear amorphous, it lay in lumpy folds, and there was limited definition of the anatomy below. However he used a distinct contour here and used it later on in his other works. It is possible that Rembrandt was trying out a new way of painting the body for the contour had a certain autonomy to it.
When it comes to the size and type, the thin copper plate on which the piece is painted matches the other Rembrandt paintings. A second painting underneath this particular work has been revealed by xrays and all the other works by Rembrandt have this dual image. People could not give an exact location for the painting before 1800 and there was a time when a Flemish engraver attributed the original to the Dutch painter Frans Hals after making a reproductive print as he did not recognize that the face in the picture was Rembrandt's. Much mystery can be attributed to the location of the painting after much silence.
