Postal Service Announces 2,000 Closings In 2011
The U.S. USPS announced Monday that it will close 2,000 locations in 2011. Because of a law that restricts the Postal service from post office closings for budgetary reasons, the locations targeted in 2011 are considered branches, or stations instead. For years, Postal service losses have totaled billions of dollars and cost cutting has failed to stymie the red ink. They have been hanging on by a thread and might possibly be looking into short term cash to keep afloat.
USPS having a difficult time right now
With nearly 500 postal closings under way, the USPS has set a goal to close a total of 2,000 this year. When it comes to service in the United States, the Postal service is required to provide the exact same amount of service all around. But the agency lost a record $8.5 billion in fiscal year 2010. It was asked for an increase postage rates by the Postal Regulatory Commission. This was rejected though. The Internet competition and the recession were the reasons why the Postal service asked for this to happen. The commission said waste and poor management was the real reason for it though. There has been a huge cut of USPS employees. Just since 1999 there has been a one 3rd cut. To cut costs, dropping Saturday delivery and closing smaller postal locations are on the table.
Making increases occur soon
With 2,000 postal locations in line for the chopping block in 2011, The USPS is re-evaluating another 16,000. You will find deficits in many of these post offices currently. About 50 percent have this problem. There is a law that allows postal service closings only if there is an expired lease or maintenance problems to deal with instead of because they are losing money which the agency is intending to get changed be Congress. After being snubbed on postage increase, the Postal service is attempting to convince politicians that its vast network of 32,000 locations is outmoded. These buildings were created when there was no e-mail, FedEx and United Parcel Service to replace it.
End of the postal era
The amount of mail is what the Postal service needs more of. This is the only way survival will happen. It's odd to see somebody writing a letter now and days. Also, junk mail isn’t sent almost as often while bills appear to be paid online almost all of the time now. Closing brick and mortar facilities is a last resort that has small towns and the politicians who represent them crying foul. The argument is the Postal service should not be able to shut down the mail system, and that it ought to stop giving so several benefits to employees first.
