The Conventional "Twelve Days Of Christmas" Are A Time For Trees, Toys, Children,
The standard "Twelve Days of Christmas" are a time for trees, toys, youngsters, eating, drinking, and spending time with those we care about. A magic, wonderful, memorable time of year. But sadly they may also be a time of tragedy, injury and loss of human life. To create your Christmas to be a happy and secure one - take a moment to consider some key safety problems.
The Christmas Tree
Real or artificial, there can be dangers in having it about the home. -Cutting your ownIf you've the opportunity to cut down your personal tree you need to be careful employing an axe, saw or chain saw. Ideally, you ought to have had training inside the secure use of any powered tool and need to wear eye, ear and body protection. And maintain children miles away! -Taking the artificial tree from the AtticThe A&E departments of the main hospitals report several incidences each year of people injured climbing into the attic, attempting to walk across the rafters, putting their foot through the ceiling and terrorising those below!Ensure that your access to the attic is stable. Fit a light in your attic that might be switched on from outside so you can see what you are doing once you enter. If you store a fair amount of junk.....sorry, "family items" ....... in your attic, strongly take into account flooring it so you can walk around it safely - doing the two-step between rafters is not a recognised dance routine and is open to much embarrassment if you mess it up. Murphy's Law works. -Dressing the tree Check the electric lights on the floor before putting them up on the tree. Check the plug and each bulb.
Replace blown bulbs, having allowed them to cool before putting them on the tree. Ensure that the cable is tucked away. A trip will cause havoc and possible injuries. Switch off the lights if there is no 1 within the house and at bedtime.Clip branches that stick out - eye injuries are often severe. Use a stepladder, a small steps or sturdy chair to dress the top section of the tree and when putting the fairy on the top.Keep a actual tree moist by sitting it in shallow water - ensure that the electric lights and cable do not come into contact with the water. Declare the tree area as a no smoking zone and maintain it well away from heaters and radiators. The Christmas tree fascinates small youngsters. Do not leave them alone near the glittering baubles! Choosing toysChoose toys with care - taking into account the child's age, interest and skill level. Look for quality, design, and the CE mark on all toys. Look for age recommendations and be sure that all directions for use are clear to you and your youngster.Specifically look for small detachable parts that may be swallowed or put into ears or nose, look for non-toxic and lead-free paint on painted toys, flame retardant/flame resistant on fabric products and washable/hygienic materials on stuffed toys and dolls. Buy in a supply of batteries for toys - check that they work at least a week before Christmas so any problems identified can be resolved with the shop. Watch for seams on poorly constructed stuffed toys, as they can break open, revealing dangerous fillings that might be swallowed or inhaled.Be particularly careful of toys that fire projectiles (arrows, bullets, pellets etc.) as they can cause eye and face injuries. Better to avoid them altogether if you can. Don't allow youngsters to play with adult gifts such as darts, hobby equipment etc.Remove all plastic packaging from the room. Leave cardboard boxes as they can amuse bored children for hours when the original toy has lost its novelty value. Cooking Christmas is a cook-a -thon , and removing a large hot turkey from the oven might be precarious. Clear the area and use a good pair of oven gloves. Be careful not to touch hot burning foil when pouring essential juices from the roasting tin.Boiling pots represent a major hazard for small kids if they can access pots and pull them down on themselves. Maintain all pot handles away from the edge of the cooker, keep small young children away from cookers and ovens, and if possible, fit a cooker rack to prevent pots being pulled down.Relatives & StressChristmas is normally a time for spending time with relatives but that in itself could be stressful. Family differences, rows, and arguments are common during the festive season. Try to manage the visit with patience and understanding - harsh words spoken are very difficult to retract once said. If the situation becomes strained take the chance to go for a walk, read quietly in a room and just make space between you and the relative that is causing grief. CandlesCandles are now a common feature in many homes, for their appearance, their soothing effect if scented, for their romantic effect and their creation of a magical atmosphere in a room. They do, however, need to be managed with fire safety in mind. Never leave a candle burning in an empty room, never leave small kids alone in a room with candles, set them up well away from curtains, fabrics and other combustible items.Always quench candles thoroughly before leaving home and before going to bed. Fire Many families light large fires in fireplaces otherwise rarely used. Before Christmas get the chimney cleaned to ensure it is secure to use. Always use a fireguard where small children are present and try to ensure that the fire is dying out before going to bed.Every home ought to have at least one smoke detector - you may require two in a two-storey house. Test the alarm weekly and never remove the battery if the detector constantly goes off when you grill food or light a fire. Take into account moving the detector further away from these heat and dust creating sources.Ensure your family know what to do inside the event of fire, how to get out, where to assemble, and who will phone the fire brigade. Ideally you need to have a fire blanket in your kitchen to deal with fat and other fires together with a multi-purpose dry powder extinguisher. An extinguisher in your car is a great idea too. Power cutsWintertime in Ireland can include power cuts - a number of years ago at Christmas large parts of the country were without electricity for days over the holiday season.Just in case it happens again arrange to have a number of torches (with batteries handy) - they are safer than candles. A small two-ring gas cooker with a gas bottle means you can heat soup and make a cuppa, if the "leccy" goes on the blink. Babysitting problems If you are going out for the evening and bring in a baby-sitter - choose your baby-sitter with care. Preferably someone you know, who has previous child-minding experience, who has met the children in advance - ideally several days before - (there is nothing more upsetting for a crying baby than to be lifted by a total stranger).Fully explain the bedtime routine including where the bottles, nappies, special toys, books, favourite music, essential medicines etc. are so they can create a familiar routine for your child while being put to bed and if they waken later.Talk through with the baby-sitter emergency situations such as fire, baby being very sick etc., and leave the number of the Fire Brigade and your Family Doctor beside the phone. Leave your contact number with the baby-sitter and encourage them to phone you if there is any difficulty. Drinking and DrivingChristmas is a time for drinking and celebrating. Even if you don't drink, others do. Driving over the Christmas period may be highly dangerous.Minimise your driving, never drink and drive, beware of frost and ice, carry de-icer with you, ensure your car is serviced and is totally roadworthy - pay particular attention to your tyres and brakes.Do your safety checks, and then have a great, happy, peaceful, and safe Christmas. Enjoy the break and re- charge your batteries for work in New Year.
